How Do I Import an Existing Presentation?

Drag and drop any .pptx file into the Rideful editor. Your slides, text, shapes, and images are preserved — then use AI to refine and improve the deck.

You don't have to start from scratch. Import an existing PowerPoint presentation into Rideful and use AI to restyle it, improve the content, add new slides, or fix layout issues — all through natural language.

How to Import

  1. Go to your decks page at rideful.io
  2. Drag and drop your .pptx file onto the import area, or click to browse and select it
  3. Wait for processing — Rideful uploads and parses the file server-side, extracting all slides, elements, and images
  4. Your deck opens in the editor when it's ready. If anything didn't come across, a short summary opens with it first, naming the slides affected

What Gets Preserved

Rideful extracts and preserves the core visual content of your presentation:

  • All slides with background colors and correct ordering
  • Text — content, font family, size, color, bold, italic, alignment, line spacing, and bullet formatting
  • Shapes — rectangles (with rounded corners preserved), ellipses, diamonds, triangles, arrows, hexagons, stars, and pies, arcs, donuts and block arcs (with their angles) with fill colors, strokes, outer shadows (set on the shape or by the theme), and text inside. Shadows on text, lines and groups, and other effects such as glow, are not imported yet
  • Lines — with stroke width, color, and style
  • Links — a shape, picture, line or text box that jumps to a slide, to the next, previous, first or last slide, or opens a web or email address keeps its link, and a link set on a group comes in on each of its elements. Present mode follows them
  • Images — PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, TIFF, and BMP formats are extracted and stored, with their outer shadows. A shadow PowerPoint scales or skews (a floor shadow under an object) or blurs past 100 pt is kept and exported but not drawn in Rideful. Soft edges and bevels on pictures are not imported
  • Tables — merged cells, each cell's text and formatting, and the table style with its options (header row, banded rows and the rest), drawn as PowerPoint draws them. A table exports back as a PowerPoint table with its style, so Table Design still works on it, its header's bold included. See How do I add and edit tables? for editing them
  • Theme colors and fonts — extracted from the file's theme data
  • Aspect ratio — automatically detected (16:9, 4:3, or 1:1)
  • Master slide data — background layer and decorative elements

What's Not Supported Yet

Some PowerPoint features can't be imported yet. They don't block the import. All but speaker notes and links are listed, with their slides, in the summary that opens with your deck:

  • SmartArt / Diagrams — complex diagram elements are not converted; a gray placeholder marks where each one was
  • Animations — exit, emphasis and motion path animations are dropped with a warning naming the slide. Entrance animations come in as fade builds, whole shapes and paragraphs alike, with their clicks and order, With Previous and After Previous, and each effect's duration and delay; one PowerPoint plays as the slide comes in plays the same way in present mode. An effect other than Fade, or one animated by word or by letter, comes in as one fade over its duration, and the summary names its slide. Trigger animations (Trigger: On Click of a shape) come in as reveals on the same shape; one on a group, on a shape that did not come in, or on a shape that also carries a link plays on the slide's clicks instead, and the summary names its slide. A shape with a 100% transparent fill comes in with no fill, so a clickable hotspot over a picture stays invisible and clickable. Transitions come in too: fade, push and Morph as they were, and any other transition as a fade
  • Speaker notes — notes are not extracted
  • Some links — a link on part of a text (one linked word) comes in as plain text, and Last Slide Viewed and End Show actions, macros, programs and links to files are dropped
  • Audio and video — embedded media is skipped
  • EMF images — Windows Metafile format is not supported

Improving Your Imported Deck with AI

This is where import gets powerful. Open the imported deck and ask in the chat panel — the agent reads every slide and element, then makes targeted changes based on your instructions. You can also connect your own AI assistant over MCP and work on the same deck from there.

Example prompts for improving an imported presentation:

  • “Review this deck and suggest improvements to the layout and visual design”
  • “Restyle the entire presentation with a modern dark theme and better typography”
  • “The content on slide 3 is too dense — split it into two slides”
  • “Add a summary slide at the end with the key takeaways”
  • “Make all titles consistent — same font, size, and position across every slide”
  • “Move the table on slide 5 under the title and widen it to the slide's margins”
  • “Add visual elements — accent lines, color blocks, and stat callouts — to make the deck more engaging”

Pro Tip: Let AI audit your deck first

Before making changes, ask the AI to review the imported deck: “Look at all slides and tell me what you'd improve.” The AI will analyze layout, consistency, content density, and visual design, then give you a prioritized list of suggestions.

Font Handling

Fonts from your .pptx file are kept as-is — Rideful does not silently replace them. Fonts the file itself embeds come with the deck, PowerPoint's compressed ones included, and go back into the file when you export. The ones you may install and reuse, embedded in full, also join Your fonts, so every deck you edit can use them. The import summary lists any embedded font it could not keep.

A font the file names but neither embeds nor finds in Rideful's library is reported as unavailable after import. If you plan to export back to PowerPoint, it can't be embedded in the file, so it renders only where it is installed. Switch it to a library font, or upload its files to Your fonts and pick it for that text.

Common Issues

  • The summary after import: Informational — the rest of your presentation is still imported. It shows once, the first time the deck opens.
  • Unavailable fonts: The import summary lists any fonts not found in Rideful's library. You can continue editing with fallback fonts or ask the AI to restyle text with available fonts.
  • Images not appearing: EMF (Windows Metafile) and some legacy image formats aren't supported. Replace them with PNG or JPEG versions.
  • Complex shapes look different: Custom shapes with advanced geometry may be simplified during import. The standard shapes — rectangles, ellipses, diamonds, triangles, arrows, hexagons, stars, pies, arcs and donuts — import accurately.
  • Text can't be edited: Every slide is one picture — the deck was exported from another tool as images. The import is fine; there is no text in the file. See Why can't I edit the text in my imported deck? for what still works and how the agent rebuilds it.
