How Do I Add and Edit Tables?

Insert a table from the toolbar, or paste a range from Excel or Google Sheets onto the slide. Edit its text, rows, columns and merges in place, pick one of Rideful's table styles, and export it as a real PowerPoint table.

Tables in Rideful are real tables. A table in an imported .pptx keeps its merged cells, text and style, and every table exports as a PowerPoint table, so Table Design still works on it in PowerPoint.

Insert a Table

  1. Click the Insert Table button on the toolbar, after the chart button.
  2. Move over the grid to choose a size. The label above it reads columns × rows, such as “4 × 3 Table”, up to 10 columns by 8 rows.
  3. Click to insert. From the keyboard, pick a size with the arrow keys and press Enter.

The new table is centered on the slide and two thirds of its width, with columns of equal width and each row one line of your deck's table text tall. It takes the default style, Medium Style 2 – Accent 1, drawn in your deck's colors, with Header Row and Banded Rows on. The caret is in the first cell, so you can start typing, and one undo removes the table.

For a bigger table, press Tab in the last cell to add a row, or right-click a cell to insert rows and columns. A table holds up to 75 rows and 75 columns.

Paste a Range onto the Slide

Copy two or more cells from Excel or Google Sheets, or a table from a web page or a document, then click the slide outside any table and press Cmd/Ctrl+V. The range becomes a new table, centered on the slide and selected:

  • From a spreadsheet or a page: two thirds of the slide's width with equal columns, in the default style. Text, bold, italic and merged cells come across; the source's colors and column widths don't.
  • From a Rideful table: the copy keeps its source table's column widths, row heights, style and options. A copy wider than the slide is scaled down to fit, keeping its text size.

One undo removes the pasted table. A single cell doesn't make a table: copied from Excel on a Mac it pastes as a picture of the cell. Only a copy that carries a table makes one, so tab-separated text from a text editor doesn't.

To paste cells into a table that's already on the slide, double-click a cell, or drag across cells, and paste there instead: the cells take that table's look.

Edit Text

Double-click a cell to edit its text with the same toolbar and shortcuts as a text box. Tab and the arrow keys move between cells, and Tab in the last cell adds a row. Each row grows and shrinks with its text, and a long word with no spaces breaks at the cell's edge.

To format several cells at once, drag across them or Shift+click; select the table and the toolbar formats every cell. A cell's bold and italic follow the table's style unless you set them: Bold in a bold header makes that text regular, and pressing it again returns it to the style. See Styling for text formatting.

Rows, Columns and Merges

  • Insert or delete rows and columns: right-click a cell.
  • Merge cells: drag across them, then right-click. Right-click a merged cell to unmerge it.
  • Resize a row or column: drag its border.
  • Move or resize the table: like any element. Resizing scales its columns and rows and keeps the text size.

Copy and Paste Cells

Drag across cells to select them, then press Cmd/Ctrl+C, X or V to copy, cut or paste them. A range pastes from the cell double-clicked, or the cells dragged across, in the receiving table's look, keeping bold, italic and merges. The table adds the rows and columns the range needs, so nothing has to be inserted first. Ranges copied from Excel or Google Sheets paste the same way.

Select the whole table to copy, duplicate or delete it like any other element.

Table Style

Select the table and click Table style on the toolbar. It picks one of Rideful's table styles, drawn in your deck's colors, and turns the style's options on and off: Header Row, Total Row, Banded Rows, First Column, Last Column and Banded Columns. A pick applies at once, and undo reverts it.

Import and Export

  • Import: a table in a .pptx comes in with its merged cells, each cell's text and formatting, and its table style with its options, drawn as PowerPoint draws them. See Import Presentation.
  • Export: every table, imported, inserted or pasted, exports as a PowerPoint table with its style, so Table Design still works on it, its header's bold included.

What the Agent Can Do

The agent in the chat, and assistants connected over MCP, can move, resize or delete a table, but can't create one or edit its cells, rows, columns or style yet. Ask the agent for a table and it points you to Insert Table on the toolbar or to pasting a range. It won't draw a table out of shapes and text boxes, which would look like one but couldn't be edited, pasted into or exported as one. When the figures suit a chart, it offers one.

Common Issues

  • The Insert Table button is unavailable: you are editing layouts. A layout can't hold a table; switch back to the slides.
  • “A layout can't hold a table.”: a range was pasted while editing layouts. Nothing is pasted; paste it on a slide.
  • An Excel range pasted as a picture: only one cell was copied. Copy two or more.
  • “Your range is too big to paste here.”: a table holds up to 75 rows and 75 columns.
  • “Your range has too much content for one table.”: paste fewer cells at a time.
  • “Pasting here would split a merged cell.”: unmerge the cell first, or paste somewhere else.
